I often wonder how with a background like mine I came to

The only involvement with technology consisted of the 
strictly mechanical variety where I learned to carry out

to time. For that I have to thank my father who could fix 
anything.

The only library was at the local sports club and fostered 
in all the kids a love of books which, for me, lasts to this 
day. Even now, I look on the internet as an extension of 
a library and an incredible learning tool which is available 
in our homes.

We were surrounded by game, including the big five, as 
well as less pleasant nasties like malaria, bilharzia and 
sleeping sickness. 

I was not totally isolated because after completing 
primary school I was sent off to a boarding school which 
lay in "civilization" at the end of a five day journey. Ten 
days of travel each term at the expense of holiday time 
seemed to me a terrible waste of time.   

After moving to South Africa in the 80s I began working in 
telecommunications and computers as the two merged. 
The gradual disintegration of the Telkom stranglehold on 
South Africa opened the way for VOX to offer the country 
a better and more competitive service which at first was 
limited to corporate business.

Early in 2008 VOX launched a product aimed at the home 
user and small business. This allowed people to make 
calls over the VOX network at reduced rates as well as
